Since we opened in May we have had such a great time meeting new folks from near and far. I can’t help but imagine how many visitors this old house has seen over the last 165 years. Heads of state, church, and business owners. People from all walks of life have come by over the years. Families with lots and lots of children once filled this home with laughter and the chaos a large family brings. It is truly a happy home and you can feel that when you walk in the front door.
Thinking back to the late 1850’s when Johnson Herron built the home for his bride, they must have visited the property often and brought their whole family by to see the progress. Then, when they moved on to Dayton, Ohio to develop that city, the Sharp family moved in. How many dignitaries walked up the walk through these front doors when President Grant visited? (I wonder how many cigars were smoked on that very same front porch!) Then, General Store owner, G.W. Swiggert’s family moved in with a passel of children. They were said to throw lavish parties here with all of Newville attending—oh if the walls could talk, we could certainly learn so much!
Fast forward to 2023 and the folks that have stopped by to visit our store or tour the home have been so very interested in local, living history. How fortunate to know Newville has some of the very same homes and properties still here and historically intact. Newville is indeed, a historian’s treasure trove. We find little pieces of history every time we dig in our garden! But more importantly, the people of Newville have proven to be filled with the history of this once bustling town that was filled with commerce. It sure feels good to be a part of bringing back a little piece of this town’s deep history and hospitality. It feels even better to know folks are so very connected to their past here—come by and visit on the porch. We’d love to hear your story.
